Chiropractic in South Africa: What Chiropractors Do and How They Can Help You

Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions related to the spine, nervous system, and musculoskeletal system. Originating in the 1800s, chiropractic has evolved significantly. While spinal manipulation was once the cornerstone of treatment, modern chiropractic care now emphasizes a holistic approach. This includes addressing movement, lifestyle, and socio-economic factors that contribute to pain. Chiropractors in South Africa are highly trained professionals who use evidence-based techniques to help patients achieve better health and wellness.

Most Chiropractors these days do a lot more than just spinal manipulations and focus on a holistic approach to patient management including movement, lifestyle, and socio-economic factors that may contribute to the painful experience.

What Do Chiropractors Actually Do?

Chiropractors in South Africa undergo six years of rigorous training. They study anatomy, physiology, biology, diagnostics, and chiropractic-specific techniques such as motion palpation, biomechanics, and manual therapy. Their training also includes spinal manipulation, dry needling, exercise therapy, and soft tissue manipulation. During their studies, they gain hands-on experience in campus clinics, treating patients under the guidance of experienced chiropractors. Additionally, they complete a master’s dissertation to qualify as chiropractors.

Once qualified, chiropractors can diagnose, manage, and treat a wide range of conditions affecting the muscles, joints, and nerves. This includes issues in the spine, shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, hips, knees, ankles, and feet. If a condition falls outside their scope, they can guide patients to the appropriate healthcare provider.

What conditions can Chiropractors in South Africa treat?

Chiropractors specialize in treating everyday aches and pains, such as lower back pain, neck pain, headaches, and shoulder or hip pain. While spine-related conditions remain a core focus, chiropractic care has expanded to address issues involving the nerves, muscles, and joints throughout the body. Chiropractors also manage sports injuries, sciatica, herniated discs, and chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.

What Techniques Do Chiropractors Use?

Spinal Manipulation

Spinal manipulation is the most well-known chiropractic technique, but it’s not just about the “crack.” The popping sound, caused by gas bubbles releasing in the joint, is not the goal of treatment. Chiropractors use spinal manipulation to influence the central nervous system, altering pain patterns and improving function.

Additional Techniques

In addition to spinal adjustments, chiropractors in South Africa use techniques like dry needling, soft tissue massage, instrument-assisted soft tissue manipulation (e.g., the “spoon” technique), stretching, and exercise therapy. Some also incorporate electro-modalities such as TENS, laser therapy, and shockwave therapy. Lifestyle advice and comprehensive pain management strategies are also integral to modern chiropractic care.

Are Chiropractors in South Africa safe?

Yes, chiropractic care is safe when performed by a well-trained professional. In South Africa, chiropractors conduct thorough diagnostic assessments, including neurological, orthopedic, biomechanical, and pain evaluations, before starting any treatment. Studies show that chiropractic care is safer than over-the-counter pain medications and often more effective for managing pain.

Chiropractors prioritize patient comfort and safety. If you’re uncomfortable with spinal manipulation, they can use alternative techniques to help you feel better and move more freely.

Can Chiropractors Prescribe Medication?

No, chiropractors cannot prescribe medication. However, some chiropractors have advanced training in pain management and can advise on how medications like anti-inflammatories may support your treatment. They often collaborate with general practitioners to ensure you receive the best care.

Do I Need a Referral or Imaging Before Seeing a Chiropractor?

No, you don’t need a referral or imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs before visiting a chiropractor. Chiropractors are trained to diagnose and manage neuromusculoskeletal conditions and can determine if further imaging or specialist care is necessary.

Is Chiropractic Covered by Medical Aid in South Africa?

Yes, most medical aids in South Africa cover chiropractic treatments, typically drawing from your medical savings. Many chiropractors, including myself, can claim directly from your medical aid. However, it’s always best to confirm coverage with your provider beforehand.

HOW LONG IS A CHIROPRACTIC CONSULT AND WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

Your initial Chiropractic consultation at The Hillcrest Chiro will be approximately 45 – 60 minutes and usually includes a detailed case history, physical examination as well as relevant orthopaedic and neurological tests ruling out any nasties and trying to get to the bottom of your pain or discomfort. Chiropractic treatment thereafter is based on findings during the consultation and will vary depending on the course of treatment we decide on. Special tests or specialist referrals will be done should it be deemed necessary.

Each follow up consultation is approximately 30 minutes.

When Should You See a Chiropractor?

If you’re experiencing pain, discomfort, or even a minor niggle, it’s a good idea to see a chiropractor. Early intervention can prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems. Chiropractors help you feel better, move better, and get back to living your best life.
